Another Fan Weighs In: Pope Francis voices gratitude & respect for nurses

“Just like a nurse, God heals our wounds with his hands.”
The grateful patient of a knowledgeable, assertive nurse, Pope Francis, spoke before a crowd of thousands in St Peter’s Square on Tuesday. After praying the Angelus and offering prayers for nurses he called “experts in humanity”, The Pope spoke about 2020: The Year of the Nurse & Midwife, praising members of our profession. “Like no other, the nurse has a direct and continuous relationship with patients, takes care of them every day, listens to their needs and comes into contact with their very body, that they tend to.”
The Pope has never been shy about praising the profession of nursing. He has spoken about the nurse who once saved his life.
As a young man, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was critically ill and receiving inadequate treatment when a nurse advocated on his behalf and argued with his doctors. He shared the experience at a meeting with Italy’s national association for nurses back in 2018.
“I thank her and I want you to know her name: Sister Cornelia Caraglio.
When, at the age of 20, I was on the verge of death, she was the one who told the doctors, even arguing with them, that I required more treatment… Thanks to that, I survived,” recalled the Pope.
As we celebrate 2020, The Year of the Nurse & Midwife, consider how a single action by one of us changes the world.
Mahalo for all you do!
