If You Only Read One Book This Year
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go.” Dr Seuss
Because we are so much more stressed than ever, with the pandemic, economy, politics, civil unrest, and natural disasters, on top of our usual work caring for our patients, families, and communities, it is important to martial all our positive coping skills and consider the sources of our stress. We know what happpens when over-stress is not addressed: Burn Out.
So, I am writing to remind you that reading for as little as 10 minutes (Yes you CAN find 10 minutes!) reduces stress levels more effectively than meditation or exercise. Reading transports us, validates us, and can make us laugh. If you only read one book this year, make it Compassion & Corruption. This amazing account of a nurse’s 30+ years in long-term care will inform you, validate you, and make you laugh.
What could be better? Talking about it with other nurses!
